The Empty Show is a movement born in Melbourne, Australia, in which local street artists invade abandoned (or empty) buildings and use the interior as their canvas. Crowds are then invited to come and view the works - until the police shut things down.
Just as an FYI - I'm still taking applications for an esteemed position as my Sugar Daddy. So I can go to events like this.
And buy new clothes.
And pay the electric bill.
And eat.
Alexandre Orion is creating art by scraping soot from the walls of tunnels in Sao Paulo, Brazil. (via Wooster Collective).
Thomas Han's colorful work is keeping me bright-eyed on this rainy morning. His images are almost fluorescent but (thankfully) not syrupy or happy: they obviously emote a harshness and sense of violence. His style also seems very urban (i.e. like graffiti/street art) to me, which we know I love.
Photographer Boogie has a new book out, entitled It's All Good, featuring his pictures of life in New York City. On his website are also amazing pics of Brazil, Cuba, Belgrade, and European Gypsies.
Visual Resistance has some great instructions on how to do street art, including wheatpasting, stencils, and stickers (which you really don't need instructions on: just go to cafepress or some site like that; permanent marker on blank labels for the subway; etc.).
I'm not familiar with wheatpasting and don't know if I've ever seen any, but apparently it's time consuming and therefore increases your chances of getting caught (???). Visual Resistance advises you to ask questions like "Who are the people in the area and how do they defend their property against creative expression?" and "Are there people who might give you refuge in their homes if you have to flee from the law?" and what to do is caught by cops: "If you get caught, you might want to try to repeat this mantra – 'art project'– and hope it works. If not make sure you ask: 'Are you detaining me? Am I under arrest? I want to assert my right to remain silent! I want to speak to a lawyer!'"
I have an idea for stickers; just need the money to get it off the ground. Hopefully by next summer.
Featuring notable street artists. Not a big Mayer fan, but I love this song.
